Curriculum

Curriculum Overview

At Church Hill School we follow The National Curriculum.

A yearly curriculum plan gives an overview of what topics are covered. Each term you will receive a parent plan which gives more details of what is being taught. Phonics is taught in Key Stage 1 using the Letters and Sounds scheme.

The reading scheme is arranged according to the book banding system. Books from a range of reading schemes including Oxford Reading Tree, Read Write inc. and Storyworld are graded according to a coloured banding system. The book banding system was developed by the Institute of Education and is used widely as a way of providing children with the experience of reading a range of books at the same level.

Children are taught phonics through the letters and sounds system. The children are tested nationally at the end of Year 1. If pupils do not pass this test they will repeat it at the end of Year 2.
